The foundation

Resiliency is a capacity we can strengthen.

Resiliency does not mean avoiding stress or becoming unaffected by adversity. It means becoming more aware of our reactions, more capable of regulating them, and more intentional about what we do next.

Mental Fitness & Resiliency Training helps people understand what happens within the mind and body during stress—and practice what they can do with that understanding.

Our approach grew through years of Semper Fi Odyssey. Working alongside wounded, injured, and ill service members deepened Outdoor Odyssey’s understanding of stress, connection, recovery, and the role of trusted relationships. Those lessons now support veterans, educators, first responders, healthcare and community professionals, youth-serving organizations, students, and others navigating challenge.

A practical model

Recognize. Regulate. Reconnect.

When we understand what is happening within us, we are better prepared to choose how we respond to what is happening around us.

Recognize

Notice what stress is doing before it determines what happens next. Participants learn to identify changes in breathing, tension, attention, emotion, thought patterns, and behavior.

Regulate

Create space between reaction and response. Participants practice breathing, grounding attention, naming emotion, gaining perspective, and choosing a response that fits the moment.

Reconnect

Return to purpose, responsibility, and people. Trust, Genuine Concern, supportive relationships, and co-regulation help us regain steadiness and move forward together.

“The goal is not to eliminate stress. It is to understand our response and become more intentional about what comes next.”

Knowledge put into practice

The lesson has to leave the classroom.

Outdoor Odyssey connects learning with reflection, relationships, and purposeful experience. Participants do more than hear an idea. They have a place to notice it working in real time.

Learn

Understand an accessible concept from stress science, mindfulness, leadership, or resiliency.

Experience

Practice it through conversation, reflection, regulation exercises, or purposeful challenge.

Reflect

Examine what happened within the person, between people, and across the team.

Apply

Identify how the learning can guide a real response at home, at school, at work, or in the community.

Genuine Concern asks a simple question: Can people feel that they matter to us?

Leadership from within

How we manage ourselves affects everyone around us.

Before we can lead others well, we must learn to understand and lead ourselves.

Remaining thoughtful under pressure, recognizing our reactions, regulating emotion, adapting when circumstances change, and understanding the effect of our behavior all strengthen our capacity to lead.

Leadership also turns outward. Through Genuine Concern, participants consider how listening, trust, accountability, and steady presence can help others feel supported rather than judged. Regulation is personal, but it is never only personal; our nervous systems affect the people around us.

Mental Fitness strengthens the individual.

Resiliency helps us recover, adapt, and continue.

Leadership turns that growth toward others.

From the mountain to everyday life

The work matters most when people carry it home.

MFRT is designed to influence real moments: a difficult conversation, a young person in distress, a team under pressure, or a person trying to recover and begin again.

Into families.
Into classrooms.
Into workplaces.
Into communities.

“The training has fundamentally changed our organizational culture and our response to youth experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges.”
