Mental Fitness & Resiliency

Strengthening the Person Within

Understand what stress is doing. Practice skills that help. Strengthen the relationships that make resiliency possible.

At Outdoor Odyssey, we believe that becoming more resilient does not mean eliminating stress or avoiding adversity. It means developing the awareness, understanding, relationships, and practical skills that better prepare us to navigate and overcome life’s challenges.

Mental Fitness & Resiliency Training (MFRT) helps individuals better understand what happens within the mind and body during stress—and, more importantly, what they can do with that understanding.

Our approach grew from nearly two decades of work through Semper Fi Odyssey with wounded, injured, and ill service members from across the country. As those experiences deepened, so did our understanding of the effects of stress, adversity, connection, and recovery. Lessons first explored alongside the military community increasingly demonstrated their relevance far beyond it.

Today, Outdoor Odyssey brings Mental Fitness & Resiliency to veterans, educators, first responders, healthcare and community professionals, youth-serving organizations, students, and others who want to strengthen their capacity to navigate challenge and positively influence the people around them.

Understanding Stress. Practicing Regulation. Building Resiliency.

MFRT begins with a simple idea: when we better understand what is happening within us, we become better prepared to choose how we respond to what is happening around us.

Participants are introduced to accessible concepts from neurobiology, mindfulness, leadership, and resiliency, including the brain and body's stress response, neuroplasticity, neuroception, self-regulation and co-regulation, emotional awareness, rumination, breathing, the Window of Tolerance, and the importance of relationships and social connection.

But knowledge alone is not enough.

Resiliency is developed by putting that knowledge into practice. Participants explore practical ways to recognize their own responses to stress, regulate more effectively, become more intentional in their thoughts and actions, strengthen supportive relationships, and recover and adapt when life becomes difficult.

The goal is not to become unaffected by stress. The goal is to become more aware of our reactions, more capable of regulating them, and more intentional about what we do next.

Mental Fitness Is Also Leadership

At Outdoor Odyssey, Mental Fitness & Resiliency does not stand apart from leadership development. The two are deeply connected.

Before we can lead others well, we must learn to understand and lead ourselves. The ability to remain thoughtful under pressure, recognize our own reactions, regulate emotion, adapt when circumstances change, and understand the effect our behavior has on others strengthens both personal resiliency and our capacity to lead.

This is also why relationships matter so deeply in our approach. We believe resiliency is strengthened through connection. Genuine Concern, trust, shared experience, and co-regulation remind us that we are not meant to navigate life's challenges entirely on our own.

Mental Fitness strengthens the individual.
Resiliency helps us recover, adapt, and continue.
Leadership turns that growth outward toward others.

Two Ways to Experience MFRT

Mental Fitness & Resiliency Training can begin with a purposeful pause or continue through a deeper, more immersive experience. Mindful Pause establishes the foundation. Mindful Odyssey creates the time and space to put that foundation into practice.

From the Mountain to Everyday Life

The purpose of MFRT has never been for the lessons to remain at Outdoor Odyssey. They are meant to travel home, into families, classrooms, workplaces, teams, and communities.

“The training has fundamentally changed our organizational culture and our response to youth experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges.”

-Ann Gustkey CEO, Greater Johnstown Community YMCA

Prior to their MFRT training, the YMCA Safe Spaces program regularly required law enforcement intervention because staff lacked the tools and confidence to effectively de-escalate situations. “Using the skills learned through Outdoor Odyssey’s Mental Fitness and Resilience Training, our staff can remain calm, regulate their responses, and apply de-escalation techniques to help youth regain control while preserving their dignity,” says Gustkey. The training has had such incredible results that in the nearly 18 months since implementing these practices, the Greater Johnstown Community YMCA has not had to ban a single youth from the Safe Spaces program. That is what Mental Fitness & Resiliency ultimately seeks to develop: people who better understand themselves, have practical tools for navigating stress and adversity, and are better prepared to support the people around them.

At Outdoor Odyssey, we have learned that leadership provides direction, Mental Fitness provides strength, and purposeful experience gives us a place to practice both. Together, they help us become more resilient people and more capable leaders for our families, schools, workplaces, and communities.
