African Odyssey 2026

A team from Outdoor Odyssey, led by our founder General Jones, traveled to Uganda and Kenya to support and expand the African Odyssey initiative. Since 2015, this program has focused on developing young leaders through mentorship, relationship-building, and practical life skills.

During this trip, our team worked alongside students, staff, and community leaders—sharing leadership principles, mental fitness strategies, and team-based learning experiences rooted in the Outdoor Odyssey and Semper Fi Odyssey models.

This was not just a visit—it was a continuation of a long-term commitment to investing in people and potential.

Uganda — Investing in Those Who Lead

Before working with students, we spent time with the Music for Life faculty and administrators, sharing a day focused on mental fitness and resiliency. Together, we explored how we respond to stress, how we stay grounded, and how we show up for the students we serve.

The conversations were open, thoughtful, and engaging. What stood out most was the shared commitment to supporting young people, not just academically, but as whole individuals. When educators are supported, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.

We are grateful for the time, trust, and partnership of the Music for Life faculty and leaders.

Uganda — Building Foundations with Young Students

During our time in Uganda, we spent meaningful time with students in the Music for Life program at their elementary school. We began with a shared devotional, creating space for reflection, connection, and simply being present together. From there, we worked alongside students, teachers, and mentors to introduce leadership and resiliency in a way that was simple and practical.

One of the frameworks we shared was: Chief “BeDoHave.” Students were encouraged to think about who they want to be, what actions they need to do, and what they hope to have as a result. Through conversation and goal setting, they began to understand that leadership starts from within and that their daily choices shape their future.

These moments were simple, but powerful, and a reminder that leadership development begins early.

Uganda - Investing in Mentors and Future Leaders

During our time in Uganda we visited Empower International Academy, working with students who serve as mentors to younger children at the school and within the African Children’s Choir community.

Our lessons focused on leadership, mental fitness, and resiliency and how these mentors support and guide the younger students around them. Their commitment to helping others grow is a powerful reminder that leadership often begins through service.

We are grateful for the partnership with Empower International Academy and for the mentors who continue to invest in the younger students each day.

Uganda — Connection

One of the most meaningful moments of our time in Uganda was connecting students, teachers, and leaders there with students, mentors, teachers, and school leaders back home.

Through Zoom conversations, people at every level shared their dreams, goals, and experiences. Students spoke with students, mentors with mentors, and educators and leaders exchanged ideas.

Despite living worlds apart, they quickly realized how much they had in common. It was a powerful reminder that mentorship, learning, and leadership can connect people across any distance.

Uganda — Cultural Experiences

Throughout our time in Uganda we were able to weave in some cultural experiences along the way — exploring markets, attending cultural events, visiting the homes of educators and students, and learning to navigate Kampala streets filled with the ever-present boda bodas. We even found ourselves on a scavenger hunt through the city searching for the best chicken in Kampala.

Uganda gave us incredible partnerships, meaningful lessons of inspiration, and friendships we will carry forward. Thank you to the many people who welcomed us with such kindness and love. In so many ways, it reflected the essence of leadership — serving others with genuine care.
